A Partnership for a Safe School
Parkview makes the safety and security of students and staff a priority. The parents of Parkview students and members of the larger community need to know that resources and procedures are in place so as to provide a learning environment as risk free as is reasonable. Parkview has the responsibility to fulfill the duties that promote a safe school. The following items describe some of the resources and procedures used to safeguard students:
- Parkview has a School Resource Officer, David Seibles, whose office is located on campus. Officer Seibles is an experienced (23 years) and armed policeman assigned to the schools of the Parkview cluster. He is not in uniform.
- Parkview has emergency plans for fire, natural disaster and threats to campus safety that are developed with the input of specialists, communicated to staff and students and practiced periodically. Such plans are reviewed annually and updated per the results of drills and suggestions of staff.
- Parkview has the direct and immediate ability to communicate with district and emergency personnel.
- Staff development is provided to staff on the recognition of behaviors which may suggest violent tendencies. Students displaying volatile or threatening behavior are referred to school administrators, counselors and appropriate service agencies. Parents are contacted.
- Plans are in place to manage emotional distress because of the untimely deaths, illness or injury of students or staff. Such plans include increasing the availability of trained counselors to students.
- Administrators and teachers are assigned to supervisory duty at key places on campus as students are coming to and departing school, during class changes and lunch. Additional supervisors are also in place at school functions after the regular school day as needed. Additional staff are also strategically assigned throughout the school to increase supervision so as to detect and prevent disruption during times of anxiety and apprehension.
- Two paid attendants patrol the parking lots and grounds.
- All staff wear employee identification badges (picture ID) and visitors to campus are required to sign in at the counseling, main or attendance offices and put on a badge identifying them as having a legitimate purpose at school.
- Each classroom has a "callback" button enabling each teacher to communicate immediately with the main office.
- All administrators carry walkie-talkies for instant two-way communication of emergencies.
- Rumors of school disruption or violence are regarded seriously, and each one is investigated as far as possible to determine its source and implications.
- A cadre of staff have been trained either in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or in "first responder" skills and procedures.
