THE COUNSELING CAREER ROOM
The Parkview Career Room, located in the Counseling office, has a wealth of career and post-secondary school resources. Materials, workbooks, pamphlets, catalogs, and computer programs appropriate for all students are available. Two IBM computers are reserved exclusively for student use. Students should make appointments to use these resources with Mrs.
Todd, our Career Specialist.
Below is a partial list of the most used resources:
- The "Georgia Career Information System" (GCIS) is a comprehensive computerized retrieval system for locating facts about colleges, professional schools, occupations, military careers, and scholarships. It contains accurate and up-to-date information on over 1,000 occupations, over 3,000 colleges and universities, and millions of dollars worth of financial aid and scholarships.
- Peterson's "Quest and College Selection Search" is an excellent computer search and information based program which aids students in choosing from over 1,990 colleges. Once the search is narrowed, specific information is provided regarding such costs as dorms, location, entrance difficulty, sports and extracurricular opportunities.
- The multimedia Career Center is a computer program designed to involve users in a systematic approach to making career decisions. This program allows users to discover and define their career interests, determine jobs relating to their career interests and abilities, explore the characteristics and requirements of specific occupations, and develop plans to enter the
occupation(s) of their choice.
- The "Occupational Outlook Handbook," "Barron's College Guide," "Peterson's College Book," "The Right College," "Chronicle's Guides," and numerous other "guide books," as well as hundreds of college and technical school catalogs are available for student use.
- Two other programs are available on the computer which will be a help to a number of students. The Study Skills Assessment and Learning Program can identify study weaknesses and teach necessary skills. This assessment is often used in conjunction with career and college decision making.
- The Career Room has a comprehensive study skills series on computer which offer help with organization, note taking, testing skills and getting along with your teachers.
There is an abundance of materials regarding ways to continue education after high school. As determined by career choice, it may be appropriate to consider a college, technical school, military service, apprenticeship program, private or business school, or a combination.
