POSSIBLE DIPLOMA SEAL OPTIONS
College Preparatory Diploma: high school diploma signifying that the student has satisfactorily completed a college preparatory program specified by the State Board of Education (BOE). Minimum of 22 units required. College Preparatory Seal with Distinction: program requiring 24 units and a grade point average in Core Courses of 3.0 or above on a four point scale or 80 numeric average or above as specified by the State BOE. Completion of this program is signified by a High School Diploma with a College Preparatory Seal of Distinction. Dual Diploma: diploma that is awarded when a student meets both GCPS college preparatory and technical education requirements. This diploma requires a minimum of 22 units. Special Education Diploma: document awarded to students with disabilities assigned to a special education program who have not met the state assessment requirements referenced in Rule 160-3-1-07 Testing Programs- Student Assessment or who have not completed all of the requirements for a high school diploma but who have nevertheless completed their Individual Education Programs. Technical Diploma with Distinction: program of study requiring 22 units as specified by the State BOE. Completion is signified by a high school diploma with a Technology/Career-preparatory Seal. (At least three technical units must be in a concentrated area and a fourth technical unit may be in the same or related area.) Technical Diploma with Distinction: program of study requiring 24 units and a grade point average in the Core Courses of 3.0 or above on a four point scale or 80 numeric grade point average as specified by the Georgia Board of Education. Completion of this program is signified by a high school diploma with a Technology/Career-preparatory Seal of Distinction.THE OPPORTUNITIES IN THE NEW WORLD OF TECHNOLOGY In the state of Georgia, high school students may graduate with either a TECHNICAL or COLLEGE PREPARATORY diploma. A DUAL (college prep plus technical specialty area) is also possible. Having the Technical diploma will better prepare students for direct entry into the work force and enrollment in a technical post-secondary institution. WHAT IS NEEDED FOR THE TECHNICAL DIPLOMA? To earn the TECHNICAL diploma, a student must take four units (eight classes) in the technical courses. Of those four units, three units (six classes) MUST be in one subject are. The other unit (2 classes) may be in any of the related technical areas. HOW CAN THE TECHNICAL AND COLLEGE PREP REQUIREMENTS BE COMBINED? Follow the specific graduation requirements of the COLLEGE PREP DIPLOMA. Replace elective courses for the College Prep with a specific technical area. Completing a COMBINATION Diploma will take no longer than the other diploma types and few electives are possible. AT MAXWELL HIGH SCHOOL OF TECHNICAL EDUCATION: Each course at Maxwell lasts for 3 class periods, earning 1.5 units per semester. Two semesters in one subject area will earn the Technical diploma. Transportation is provided for Maxwell.
