RECOMMENDATIONS & TESTING REQUIREMENTS

The following is a suggested list of activities for student use regarding career and academic planning, decision making, and implementation of career goals.

ALL STUDENTS EACH YEAR
  • Listen to Daily Announcements for important information.
  • Attend the PTSA Open House each semester.
  • Watch your grades! Study hard. Ask for help if you need it.
  • Visit the Career Room and explore some of the college, technical school and career information.
  • Make an appointment with your counselor.
FRESHMEN YEAR
  • Begin considering what type of diploma you would like.
  • Listen carefully to the counselor orientation program presented in September.
  • Complete the Four Year Plan through classroom guidance sessions.
  • Begin exploring career ideas.
  • You may take the PSAT in October. However, you probably will not have taken many of the courses which are relevant to many questions on the PSAT. The PSAT is not normed for Freshmen, consequently the percentiles reported may not be valid for you. It may prove to be a learning experience for you.
SOPHOMORE YEAR
  • If you are an overall B student and have a strong interest and an A average in a particular subject area, you may wish to talk to that subject area teacher about the Governor's Honors Program. The PSAT is required.
  • Take the PSAT in October.
  • All students are required to pass all sections of the Gateway tests which are based on the AKS.
  • Participate in the career exploration programs.
JUNIOR YEAR
  • Listen and share with your family all information presented to you by the counselors: PSAT, SAT, ACT, graduation requirements, etc.
  • Study the results of the PSAT as a tool to improve scores for the SAT and as a tool to help with career decisions.
  • Begin exploring post-secondary options. Visit some campuses.
  • Make an appointment with your counselor.
  • All students are required to pass the Georgia High School Graduation Test which is offered in the spring of the eleventh grade. Students who do not pass will be given the opportunity to retake the test in the summer and also in the fall and spring of the senior year.
  • Take the PSAT in October.
  • Take both the SAT and ACT at least once, preferably in the spring.
  • Attend PROBE Fair in the fall and spring.
  • Use the Career Room information to further explore options.
  • Talk with college, technical, and military representatives. They are available in the cafeteria during lunch. Announcements are made daily.
  • Talk with teachers about AP course possibilities.
  • Tour college and technical school campuses. Talk with admission and financial aid representatives. Write for catalogs and information.
  • Explore the Post Secondary Option (Joint College Enrollment).
  • Read each issue of the "Junior Update".
SENIOR YEAR
  • Meet with your counselor and career specialist.
  • Passing all parts of the HS Graduation Test is a requirement for graduation. It is offered to you, if needed, during the fall and spring of your senior year.
  • Read the "General Senior Information" distributed in the September Senior classroom guidance session.
  • Take the SAT and the ACT at least twice, and as early as possible.
  • Take the SAT-II and AP Tests if required by your colleges.
  • Write to all post-secondary schools requesting admissions applications, catalogs, information and applications for grants, loans, scholarships, and work-study programs.
  • Apply to post-secondary schools by mid-November.  Be sure and check for college application deadlines.
  • Request Transcripts and Test Scores (Counseling Office) early so that you can include them with your applications.
  • Attend the Financial Aid meeting with parents in the fall.
  • Scholarships are announced daily on the announcements. A compiled list is posted in senior English classrooms as well as the Career Room, and included on Senior Update.
  • Attend all meetings about post-secondary options and opportunities.
  • Explore career room information. Use the computerized GCIS Program.
  • Attend Probe Fair in the fall.
  • Take notes on classroom guidance sessions. Share them with your parents.
  • Talk with post secondary school recruiters visiting campus.
  • Apply for all appropriate scholarships, financial aid.
