PERSONAL COUNSELING

Counselors are available by appointment for:

Assisting students with career decisions, post-secondary choices and the application process. Counselors will attempt to identify a problem or roadblock in each student’s quest and intervene when appropriate.

Meeting with concerned parents. Parents should contact the Counseling Office to request an appointment with the appropriate counselor.

Discussing options. Although it is the responsibility of the student to complete the courses appropriate for his/her diploma choice, each student can meet individually with his/her counselor.

Counseling with students about personal concerns and problems, such as parent-child relationships, academic or motivation problems, student-teacher and peer relationships, school adjustment, etc.

Crisis Intervention and referrals. Some areas of crisis intervention for which identification of need and referral are appropriate include threatened suicide, pregnancy, abuse, and extreme emotional or behavioral problems. School counselors do not engage in private therapy.

Parents may wish to consult their child’s medical doctor and insurance carrier for appropriate procedures if a private therapist is being considered. The responsibility of private therapist and related fees lies with the parent.

CLASSROOM GUIDANCE

Use of classroom guidance is an efficient method to dispense information to students. Topics include, but are not limited to, academic planning, test-taking skills, career development, post-secondary opportunities, scholarship and financial aid procedures, and orientation to high school. Personal issues and problems are discussed when appropriate.

PEER LEADERS

Caring and responsible juniors and seniors are selected and trained to work with the counseling staff, offering academic and personal support to the student body. Their many duties include working with new students, participating in freshman orientation guidance programs, academic tutoring, study skill, and helping in the Career Room.. The Peer Leaders are a valuable asset to the school and our students greatly benefit from their services.
