What is OSS?

Open source refers to a particular development method that takes advantage of peer review and code transparency. The potential of open source development encompasses improved quality, enhanced reliability, generally lower costs, and superior flexibility.

In addition, the monopolistic tendencies of a vendor lock-in are prevented. Although open source implies that a consumer has access to source code, the term also entails certain criteria that must be met. Consumers distribute software freely amongst one another. The beauty of open source lies in the fact that the code evolves to meet the needs of the user. Too often development teams are constantly at work revising, patching and updating any problems in software, but OSS allows for the advancement of code through peer critical review.
