Course Title and Description

French III, Honors.  The objective of this course is to develop fluency in the five basic skills of communication in French: listening, understanding reading, speaking and writing in order to promote an appreciation and understanding of the French-speaking people, their culture and civilization.

 As this is an Honors level class, students are expected to be self-directed in regards to practice work/homework.  Class time will be spent on instruction and enrichment activities.

This class is a continuation of French 2 with a deeper understanding of the language and culture.  It is designed to allow students to understand more complex written text and verbal material and to communicate verbally and in writing at a higher level of proficiency.  There will be a variety of classroom activities including, but not limited to, listening to French-language tapes, viewing videos, listening to French music, completing written exercises, completing work in groups, groups and individual projects.

 Textbook and Materials:

• Glencoe French 3, Bon voyage!  $ 57.00

• Glencoe French 3, Bon voyage!  Workbook and Audio Activities $ 15

• 3-ring binder (1½-2”rings) notebook and regular ruled notebook paper

• 1 set (10) tabbed section dividers

• 1 large supply of 3 x 5 index cards (500)

• 1 bi-lingual dictionary (highly recommended)

• 1 box of tissue

• 1 highlighter and black dry erase marker

Chapters to be Covered:

First semester:  Review- chapter 3

Second semester: Chapters 4-6, and some supplementary literature.

Grading Procedure:

Daily Work:  homework, quizzes, in-class work, skits        50%

Test:  tests, participation, projects                         30%

Final Exams                                                          20%

Grading Scale:

A = 90-100, B = 80-89, C = 74-79, D = 70-73, F = 0-69

Grading Procedure for Written and Spoken Evaluations:

I will be using SWELL, which is an objective assessment tool for written and spoken performances.  Students will receive a copy of the rubric prior to these evaluations.

Academic Policies

• Come to class prepared everyday.  This includes bringing textbook, notebook (kept in chronological order and all work dated), workbook, pens, daily assignments, as well as bringing a positive attitude for the work to be done in class each day. You will not be permitted to leave class to get something you forgot.  You are expected to give 100% of yourself during class.
• No work will be accepted late.  It is late after the time it is asked for in class.  The only exception to this is vocabulary, which can be turned in for 50% the next day.
• Make up work and re-takes on quizzes and evaluations are to be done after school between 2:10 and 3:00. I will be available during this time for any problems or concerns as well.
• Re-takes must be done within five school days of the quiz/test being returned.
• Make up work is your responsibility.  You have five school days from the day you are absent to make up the work or evaluations. After that you forfeit the opportunity to earn a grade and will receive a zero for that particular assignment.
• Previously assigned work must be returned the day you return following an excused absence.
• You will be doing work in groups.  It is your responsibility to contribute to the group’s efforts as well as completing your individual’s work.  A portion of your grade will be based on your participation.
• Cheating will not be tolerated.  This includes copying homework and class work.  No talking will be permitted during tests and quizzes.  Students deciding to cheat will receive a zero and be referred to the Assistant Principal for disciplining. (See PHS Honor Code)

Behavior Policies

• No student will be permitted to interfere with another’s right to learn.  Do not interrupt the teacher or another student while s/he is speaking.
• Absolutely no derogatory language will be tolerated.  Use of derogatory language will result in a discipline referral.
• Any irregularities found in the usage of the technology (TV, VCR/DVD, Language Lab, boombox, computers and cell phones) will be dealt with immediately and with strict enforcement of the rules.
• You are responsible for being in the classroom and ready for instruction when the bell rings.    The policy outlined in the Parkview Student Handbook will be strictly enforced.  This policy states that 3 tardies to class will equal an absence and 10 absences per semester will put your receiving credit for this course in jeopardy.  See PHS STAMP policy.
• Upon entering the classroom, please remove needed material from backpack, be seated and remain seated until the bell rings to dismiss.
• Attend to personal grooming before of after class, not during.
• Please do not ask to go the restroom unless it is an absolute emergency.
• Please help to keep our classroom pleasant by disposing of waste in a proper manner.
• Please sharpen pencils before instruction begins.
• All policies noted in the Student Handbook will be followed in this class.
