Voice of Democracy Competition: November
1, 2007

see a Media Specialist or Ms. Huie! Someone from the local VFW post will
pick up the tape, so any student who is interested needs to let Ms. Huie
know by the October 21 so that she can arrange to have the entry delivered.
The national VFW awards numerous cash awards; the top prize is a $30,000
scholarship.

history exemplifying the civic value(s). First prize--$5000!
Guidelines: Essays
should be no longer than 3300 characters including spaces, which is
approximately 500 words. Students in grades 9-12 may participate. Essays
must be submitted by a teacher sponsor online at
www.BeinganAmerican.org.
Letters about Authors
Guidelines: Students
write a letter to an author (living or dead) about how that author’s work
has affected the student’s life. Sponsored by the Library of Congress, the
contest is judged locally, with local winners sent on for national
competition. I don’t have all the information for this year’s contest, but
the deadline will probably be late November or early December.
Scholastic Art and Writing Awards:
Information
will be posted online in October 2007. This is a great contest for seniors
who can put together a writing portfolio; however, students in any grade may
enter in the individual categories. Recognition in this contest is
prestigious. Go to the website at
www.scholastic.com or
www.artandwriting.org for more information. Contest categories include
dramatic script, poetry, journalism, science fiction, humor, memoir, and
other composition genres. There is an entry fee.
