Contest Information, Links, and Contacts

2007-2008

Voice of Democracy Competition: November 1, 2007

Guidelines: 3-5 minute speech on “Why I Am an American Patriot.”  Submit speech on a cassette tape with a print copy and entry form attached.  If you need help with the tape, see a Media Specialist or Ms. Huie!  Someone from the local VFW post will pick up the tape, so any student who is interested needs to let Ms. Huie know by the October 21 so that she can arrange to have the entry delivered.  The national VFW awards numerous cash awards; the top prize is a $30,000 scholarship.

PHS Fall Poetry/Art Contest: November 5, 2007

Guidelines: Submit three copies of your poetry with an entry form; forms are available in LA classrooms.  Cash Prizes!!!!!  In each grade level!!!!!!  First prize in each grade level is $25; second prize is $15; third prize is $10.

Topic: I Can Make a Difference By”

Poetry, Prose, Photography, Art, Dance, Music, Film

We do not have the dates from the local PTSA, but expect the deadline to be early October!

Being an American Essay Contest: December 3, 2007

Guidelines: 3300 character (not word!) essay on the following topic: What civic value(s) do you believe are most essential to being an American, and how can you personally put these values into practice?  To support this personal response, reference a Founding document as well as a figure from American history exemplifying the civic value(s).  First prize--$5000!

Guidelines: Essays should be no longer than 3300 characters including spaces, which is approximately 500 words.  Students in grades 9-12 may participate.  Essays must be submitted by a teacher sponsor online at www.BeinganAmerican.org

Letters about Authors

Guidelines: Students write a letter to an author (living or dead) about how that author’s work has affected the student’s life.  Sponsored by the Library of Congress, the contest is judged locally, with local winners sent on for national competition.  I don’t have all the information for this year’s contest, but the deadline will probably be late November or early December.

Scholastic Art and Writing Awards:

Information will be posted online in October 2007.  This is a great contest for seniors who can put together a writing portfolio; however, students in any grade may enter in the individual categories.  Recognition in this contest is prestigious.  Go to the website at www.scholastic.com  or www.artandwriting.org for more information.  Contest categories include dramatic script, poetry, journalism, science fiction, humor, memoir, and other composition genres.  There is an entry fee.

Georgia Poetry Society Contests for Youth Poetry: Deadline January 24, 2008

Guidelines: poetry, maximum of 32 lines; open to students grades 9-12.  Poetry must be original, unpublished student work.

Manuscript specifications: All entries must be sent from the school, so if you want to enter, have your poetry to Ms. Huie by January 24, 2008.  Poems must be typed, 12-point TNR, and not illustrated.  Submit two copies of the poems, one without any author information; the copy with identification should be attached to the entry form.  The entry form must be signed by a sponsoring teacher.  For more information, see www.georgiapoetrysociety.org/youth_contest.htm.  GPS reserves rights to the poem for publication in its anthology; if your poem is not selected for the anthology, rights revert to you!

Georgia Perimeter College: Deadline January 25, 2008

Guidelines: Poetry, essay, and fiction submissions accepted.  Poetry may be 8-40 lines; fiction and essay no longer than 1000 words.

Manuscript specificiations: Each entry must be typed, double-spaced, 12-point TNR font.  Students must also attach a completed entry form with signed publication release for GPC.  (Entry forms available in Trailer 7.)  Manuscripts will not be returned.

Deadline: January 25, 2008 to GPC; January 23, 2008 to Ms. Huie, Room 10.103.

NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing: Deadline for nomination February 1, 2008

Guidelines: Parkview may nominate four juniors for this award.  Students send samples of “best writing” (no more than ten typed, double-spaced pages) and write an impromptu theme on an assigned theme.

River of Words: Deadline February 15, 2008

Guidelines: poetry no longer than 32 lines on the theme of watersheds.  (Basically, anything about water—if a student writes a good poem using water as a metaphor for the family that nurtures and supports him, it could be a winner!)  This contest also recognizes art and photography related to the theme.

Manuscript specifications: see www.riverofwords.org

Deadline: February 15, 2008.

Leslie Walker Memorial Writing Contest: February 15, 2008

Guidelines: Any genre, no longer than 1000 words about a place.  Best works will describe places in ways that help the reader understand the ways the place’s past influences the present, help the reader understand how traditions are changing for that place, or help the reader imagine the sensations of the place.  All entries must be submitted by your teacher; each teacher may submit up to twenty student works.  Go to the web site of the Kennesaw Mountain Writing Project for entry forms and more information.

Georgia Council of Teachers of English Writing Awards

Teachers who are GCTE members may submit up to five entries, no more than two from any student. Works may be poetry or prose, 1200 word maximum length.  Selected works will be published in GCTE’s publication, Mindscapes.

Manuscript specifications: 12 pt.s font, TNR.  Entry form required.  (If you do not have the form, see Ms. Huie in late spring.)
