Course Title and Description

FL 365/366 Spanish III Honors.  The objective of this course is to develop fluency in the five basic skills of communication in Spanish:  listening, understanding, reading, speaking, and writing in order to promote an appreciation and understanding of the Spanish-speaking people, their culture and civilization.  These skills will be emphasized as we begin our study of Spain, including its people, art, history, geography, culture and cuisine.

 

As this is an Honors level class, students are expected to be self-directed in regards to practice work/homework. More class time will be spent on instruction and enrichment activities than in the College Prep level class. 

 

There will be a variety of classroom activities including, but not limited to, listening to Spanish language tapes, viewing videos, listening to Spanish music, completing written exercises, completing work in groups, group and individual projects.

          a large supply of 3 x 5 index cards (500)

          Spanish/English, English/Spanish dictionary

501 Spanish Verbs (recommended)

v      Continued study and expansion of grammar and  vocabulary (text chapters 1-7)

v      Spanish history and geography

 

 

Grading Procedures

            All work will fit into the following categories:

            Daily Work  -  30% of semester grade (15% participation)

                             This includes homework, in-class assignments, group work, paired practice             

          Quizzes  -  20% of semester grade

There will be many vocabulary and verb quizzes this semester.  These will always be announced.  Since our goal is student success, you are encouraged to re-take quizzes if you do not make a B the first time.  These re-takes will be done at my convenience after school.  The higher of your scores (up to 80%) will be recorded.

            Unit Evaluations/Projects  -  30% of semester grade

Students will be required to demonstrate mastery of each completed unit throughout the semester.  These demonstrations will take many forms, including unit tests, original writings, projects, group presentations, individual presentations, speaking exercises, and listening activities.  You will be permitted to re-do some of these evaluations also.  However, due to the nature of many of  these evaluations, specific time limitations and restrictions will be required.   You will be notified of these limitations with each evaluation.

            Cumulative semester final  -  20% of semester grade (5% speaking, 5% writing, 10% listening/reading)

            Grades will be assigned as follows:  A:  90-100   B: 80-89   C: 74-79   D: 70-73   F: below 70

 ***The teacher reserves the right to change and/or adapt course content and grading as necessary.

 

Academic Policies

·         Come to class prepared everyday.  This includes bringing textbook, notebook (kept in chronological order and all work dated), workbook, pens, daily assignments, as well as bringing a positive attitude for the work to be done in class that day.  You will not be permitted to leave class to get something you forgot.  You are expected to give 100% of yourself during this class, and be assured that I will do the same for you.

·         No work will be accepted late.  It is late after the time it is asked for in class.  The only exception to this is  vocabulary cards, which will be accepted on the second day for a 50%.

·         Re-takes on quizzes and evaluations are to be done after school between 2:10 and 3:00 within five school days of return.  I will be available during this time for any problems and/or concerns as well.

·         Make-up work is your responsibility.  You have five school days from the day you are absent to make-up work.  After that time you forfeit the opportunity to earn a grade and will receive a zero for that particular assignment. This includes all in-class work.  You are responsible for checking assignments on the website- Parkview.net > Academics > Foreign Language > Rebecca Munro

·         If you are absent the day of a testing procedure, you are expected to make it up within five days of the day that you return.  This is to be done after school between 2:10 and 3:00.

·         Previously assigned work must be turned in the day you return following an excused absence.  On some occasions I will collect an alternate assignment to replace a missed daily grade if  it is necessary.  It will be considered late after your first day back and will not be accepted. 

·         You will be doing some work in groups.  It is your responsibility to contribute to the group's efforts as well as completing your individual work.  Remember, a portion of your daily grade will be based on your participation.

·         Cheating in any form will not be tolerated.  This includes copying homework and classwork.  No talking will be permitted during tests and quizzes.  Students deciding to cheat will receive a zero and be referred to the Assistant Principal for disciplining. (See Honor Code)

Behavior Policies

·         ***No student will be permitted to interfere with another's right to learn.  Do not interrupt the teacher or another student while s/he is speaking.  All students have an important contribution to make in this class, and no one's presence is to be trivialized.***

·         ***Absolutely no derogatory language will be tolerated!!! Use of derogatory language will result in a discipline referral.

·         Any irregularities found with the usage of the technology (TV, DVD/VCR, boombox, computer) will be dealt with immediately and with strict enforcement of the rules.  Students are completely trusted with the technology until they prove otherwise.  

·         You are responsible for being in the classroom and ready to work when the bell rings.  The policy outlined in the Parkview Student Handbook will be strictly enforced.  This policy states that 3 tardies to class will equal an absence and 10 absences per semester will put receiving credit for this course in jeopardy.  Matters regarding this policy will be referred to the Assistant Principal in charge of Attendance. ·         Upon entering the classroom: please remove needed materials from backpack, hang backpack on hook,  be seated, and remain seated until the bell rings for dismissal.

·         Attend to personal grooming before or after class, not during.

·         ***All policies noted in the Student Handbook will be followed in this class.***

 

Please remember that the success of each student in this class is very important to me.  If you feel yourself falling behind, please see me immediately and we will work together to correct the problem.
