Course: Philharmonic Orchestra

The Philharmonic Orchestra is a performing ensemble that performs several major concerts during the school year, in addition to participating in various county, district, and state-wide contests and events.

Sectionals before school, after school rehearsals, festival, festival camp, and all other performances are required for membership in the Philharmonic Orchestra.

Materials: method book, sheet music, black 3-ring notebook, clear sheet covers, metronome for use at home, pencil w/eraser, rosin, cloth, instrument, shoulder rest for violinists and violists, rock stop for cellists & bassists, mute, tuner, extra strings, uniform  

Please note:

  1. Some instruments are provided by the school but every student who uses a school owned instrument must contribute $60.00 per year for maintenance and repair costs.
  2. All students become responsible for school property when issued.
  3. Any student whose instrument is being repaired must bring a note from their parent or their participation grade will be lowered.

Course Content: Selections from the GMEA orchestra list will be studied in preparation for festival adjudication. Periods in music history will be studied, and music will be chosen that represents various styles and periods. Performance practices will be utilized and the students will learn basic music theory and music appreciation. 

Please refer to the PHS Orchestra Calendar for specific dates regarding concerts. A copy will be handed out at PHS Orchestra Parents Meeting and to all students in class.
