1.
As you know, AP chemistry is not only an elective,
but a college level course.
The environment in this classroom will be very close to college
environment.
2.
The AP exam is a comprehensive test on the whole year’s work.
Therefore, every minute is important.
Do everything to the best of your ability.
NO ROOM FOR LAZINESS.
3.
You will come to class on time, maintain good
behavior and remain in your seat until the bell rings.
You can talk before class starts but once class starts,
NO TALKING.
You will use class time, even when the teacher is not teaching,
to learn and reflect on what you have been taught.
4.
Assignment must be completed as and when due.
Most homework assignment will be internet-based on webassign.
Assignment will usually be posted for 2 days to 7 days or more.
The first time you log on to the assignment, print it out 4 or 6
pages to a page and bring that to class everyday.
As we complete the concepts, do the relevant problems, if you
have problems, make sure you get help.
Answers can be submitted per question or all at once.
5.
Make sure you do not procrastinate.
Close to the due date/time, everybody might be submitting at the
same time and if yours is on cue when the due time expires, your
submission will not be accepted.
6.
Webassign is not perfect, but mostly good for practice and reviewing
concepts.
7.
Labs are after school most of the time.
Since facilities are limited and we have two classes, periods 3 &
7 will alternate. Lab
reports are due on the MONDAY after the lab.
Handouts for lab will normally be given out a day or more before
the lab. Make sure you read
through the lab, you know the concept it is based on, how you will do
the lab (procedure) and the calculations involved.
Also complete the pre-lab if there is any.
HONESTY is very
important in lab reports.
Chemists report observations accurately because it might involve
somebody’s life.
8.
During first semester, you will turn in an abstract
of a recent scientific article
based on chemistry every two weeks.
You must cite your source in
APA style.
The abstract must summarize the main idea or problem solved, how
it was solved and conclusions/recommendations. (Avoid plagiarism).
9.
You will always have
POP quizzes to check
your progress, therefore, be current and ready at all times.
Tests will be done on two chapters at a time and sometimes three.
You will make summaries of the chapters being tested and this
will be due on the day of the test.
Late submissions will not be accepted.
10.
Form study
groups because two heads are better than one.
Learn from the “Lesson of the Geese”.
Standard Operating Procedure" (SOP) For Gifted Chemistry
|
Preamble:
Chemistry is a challenging course. It is not like any of the courses you
have taken so far. Consequently, you need to realign your attitude,
choices and priorities in order to be successful. Chemistry is a
cumulative course, meaning, it builds up.
Whatever you learn at any time will be used later, therefore, you cannot
afford to forget that concept. You must study it until you know it. If
not, get help from a classmate, an upper classman or the teacher. If you
do not get timely help, you will find yourself in trouble when it is
time to apply the concept.
Chemistry requires discipline and good time management. The four P’s of
chemistry are:
- Planning
- Patience
- Practice and Persistence
This is how we shall conduct business in this classroom:
- You must try to come to school every day unless an absence is
unavoidable.
- You must come to class with your materials as contained in your
syllabus.
- You must remain in your seat from bell to bell and pay attention.
If the teacher is done with the day’s topic before the bell rings,
you will review what was done during the period or ask somebody to
explain what you did not understand.
- You must make appointment for help on what you do not understand.
Academics take priority over extracurricular activities. You must
keep the appointment.
- You must maintain a high level of discipline (less talking, more
productive use of time).
- You will raise your hand one at a time to ask questions. If you
think you are intelligent, help somebody to understand concepts,
do not ridicule or laugh at anybody. Make productive use of your
guided study time every day. If something is difficult, try
harder.
- Try to understand lab before doing it. Do not waist time during
lab and make sure you clean up your workspace.
- Glassware must be cleaned before storage. Take note of what is
stored in each drawer or cabinet so they are returned to their
proper location. Good housekeeping earns points and bad housekeeping
will result in loss of points.
- Start your lab promptly and work fast so you can finish on time.
- Go to restroom before class (or last 5 minutes of class with
permission).
- If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what was
done. All makes-ups must be completed within 5 school days according to
school rules. Labs can only be made up after school. |
