Option 1:            Meaning of Names

Research the origins and meanings of the names Golding selected for his characters in Lord of the Flies. 

For each of the characters (Ralph, Simon, Jack, Roger, Sam, Eric, Robert, Percival, Henry, and Maurice), tell:

¨       the origin of the name (Celtic, French, Greek, Irish, etc.)

¨       the meaning of the name

¨       whether you think that name fits the character

Option 2:            Compare and Contrast

Watch the most recent Lord of the Flies movie and write a one-page response.  How are the movie and the book similar?  How are they different?  Did you agree with the director’s portrayal of the story?  Did you agree with the boys the producer cast for the characters?

Option 3:            Predictions—10 years later

What do you think each child grew up to be like after they left the island?  What would Piggy and Simon be like if they had lived?  Give evidence from the book to support your predictions.
