A Separate Peace Extra Credit Assignments

Choose one of the following options. It will be worth a maximum of 5 bonus points.

Option 1: Meaning of Names

Research the origins and meanings of the names John Knowles selected for his characters in A Separate Peace. Tell whether you think those names are appropriate or not.

Option 2: Campus Map

Draw a detailed map of the Devon School campus, including all the dorms, academic building, and athletic fields. Also include the rivers and “the tree.”

Option 3: Illustrate a Scene

Illustrate a scene you think is important. Include a description of which scene is being shown and an explanation of why you chose to draw it the way you did.

Option 4: Character Portraits

Draw portraits of Gene and Finny. Make sure your illustration is accurate to the way they are described in the book. Include a paragraph explaining why you chose to draw them the way you did.

Option 5: Theme Music

Select two songs you think are appropriate for the themes found in A Separate Peace. Include a paragraph explaining why you chose each song.

Option 6: Collage

Make a medium-sized collage of pictures and words relating to one of the novel’s themes. Include a paragraph explaining why you chose to include those particular images and words.
