Course Description:  This course provides practice in using language for real purposes related to a student’s goals and needs.  A balance of composition, applied grammar, and literature will be maintained to prepare the student for a variety of choices upon graduation. (Technical Diploma)

- The British Tradition

- Writing and Grammar

- Vocabulary Workshop

- The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

- Supplementary novels and plays

- Teacher-prepared handouts

 

Units to be Studied:

The Old English and Medieval Periods (A.D. 449-1485)

The English Renaissance Period (1485-1625)

The Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries (1625-1798)

The Romantic Period (1798-1832)

The Victorian Period (1833-1901)

The Modern and Postmodern Periods (1901-Present)

Grammar / Usage / Composition units integrated with literature

SAT Preparation and Strategies

 

Grading:

            Evaluation will occur throughout the semester.  The points system will be used to determine grades.  Assignments, quizzes, and tests will be weighted by their point values.  At the conclusion of each semester, a comprehensive final exam will count twenty percent of students’ final averages.  The weighting of the exam is dictated by Gwinnett County Public Schools.  The final grades will be based on the Gwinnett County Public Schools grading scale.

 

The instructor will be available before and after school.  Please make an appointment for make-up work.
