Poetry Project

Sophomore Poetry Unit Project – 100 points

For this unit, we will be discussing poetry terminology. In order to expand your knowledge of poetry terms, you will create a Poetry Notebook. The notebook will consist of poems that you choose from sources other than your textbook, which demonstrate specific categories. You will be given an opportunity in class to work on the project. You may use your own poetry books, check them out from the public library, or get poems off the Internet.

Requirements:

You must include 9 poems, 1 from each of the following categories: narrative poetry, dramatic poetry, speaker and tone, lyric poetry, figurative language, imagery, musical devices, form or structure, and theme.

Each poem is worth a total of 10 points. For each poem you must include:

*A copy of the poem (1 point)

*An explanation of the poem (3 points)

*Two devices used in the poem. The devices must come from the list of terms. You must state specifically where these devices can be found in the poem. (2 points)

*A list of the ways it displays characteristics of the category (2 points)

*A visual representation of the poem (2 points)

Additionally, your project will be graded for neatness and creativity (10 points). The final project must have (1) a front cover page that includes your name and period, exhibiting design or art (2 points),(2) a plastic cover to enclose it (2 points),  (3)aesthetic appeal throughout the project (neatness and creativity). There will be no separate unit test for poetry. Poetry will be included on the final exam, however. You should be familiar with each of the poetry terms in your AKS for the exam.
